Can You Change Health Insurance Carriers During Your Pregnancy?

At Bob Korvas Agency Inc. serving the greater Niles, IL area, we are often asked questions pertaining to health insurance policies and pre-existing conditions. Many people do not understand the way the laws work for pre-existing conditions and their health insurance policies. One of the more specific questions that we are often asked is whether you can change your health insurance provider when you are pregnant. Here is what you need to know about this topic.

Can You Change Health Insurance Carriers During Your Pregnancy?

You can change health insurance carriers during your pregnancy. However, if you are purchasing a private policy, pregnancy is considered a pre-existing condition. As such, you may have to declare that you are pregnant and your premiums may be significantly higher. Pre-existing conditions do not come into play with employer-sponsored health insurance plans or plans you are buying from the health insurance marketplace.

Does Pregnancy Count as a Life Changing Event for the Health Insurance Marketplace?

You can only change or purchase a new health insurance plan through the health insurance marketplace for a life-changing event. Becoming pregnant does not qualify as a life-changing event. As such, unless it is open enrollment period, you will not be able to change your plan or purchase a new one simply due to the pregnancy. Once you have your child, it is considered a life-changing event, and you will be able to change or buy a new policy at that time.
