What is Dental Insurance?

The world around us is constantly changing and healthcare is one of those things.  Laws and rules change almost constantly so it can be hard to know how things work.  We may assume that dental is covered under medical, but most of the time it is not.  Bob Korvas Agency Inc. wants you to understand so you can make an informed decision when purchasing insurance.

Dental Insurance

The Basics

Niles IL is a nice place to live, but life can be stressful if you don’t know your way around insurance.   There are options to choose from when selecting a dental policy and some give you more coverage than others.

PPO

Preferred Provider Organizations tend to give more flexibility.  Dental PPOs typically offer a larger network of dentists, but it comes at a cost.  Monthly premiums run higher than other options available.

HMO

Health Maintenance Organizations provide limited coverage for a reduced cost.  Dental HMOs provide their members with a list of contracted providers and a primary dentist must then be selected.  If members see someone who is out of network insurance won’t pay.  Referrals to a specialist must be made by the primary dentist.

Dental Indemnity

Dental Indemnity policies require the member to pay the dentist directly and then submit a form for reimbursement.  Disadvantages of this type of policy include long waits for reimbursement, but they have greater flexibility in selecting a dentist.

Dental Savings Plans

Dental Savings Plans are exactly that.  They are not dental insurance.  All they do is provide a discount for services to people who pay an annual membership fee.

Can You Change Health Insurance Carriers During Your Pregnancy?

At Bob Korvas Agency Inc. serving the greater Niles, IL area, we are often asked questions pertaining to health insurance policies and pre-existing conditions. Many people do not understand the way the laws work for pre-existing conditions and their health insurance policies. One of the more specific questions that we are often asked is whether you can change your health insurance provider when you are pregnant. Here is what you need to know about this topic.

Can You Change Health Insurance Carriers During Your Pregnancy?

You can change health insurance carriers during your pregnancy. However, if you are purchasing a private policy, pregnancy is considered a pre-existing condition. As such, you may have to declare that you are pregnant and your premiums may be significantly higher. Pre-existing conditions do not come into play with employer-sponsored health insurance plans or plans you are buying from the health insurance marketplace.

Does Pregnancy Count as a Life Changing Event for the Health Insurance Marketplace?

You can only change or purchase a new health insurance plan through the health insurance marketplace for a life-changing event. Becoming pregnant does not qualify as a life-changing event. As such, unless it is open enrollment period, you will not be able to change your plan or purchase a new one simply due to the pregnancy. Once you have your child, it is considered a life-changing event, and you will be able to change or buy a new policy at that time.
